You Reap What You Sow by Chris Widener

There is an old principle: You reap what you sow. In fact, it is about as natural of a principle as you can get. When you put an apple seed into the ground, you always get an apple tree. You reap what you sow.

Even as this principle works in nature, it also works in our businesses, schools and organizations. Everything that we do is what we are sowing. And while we may not see immediate gains or gratification from our actions, it is true that eventually we will. Some time in the future, the totality of our actions and words will amount to something. I want to give us a few ideas to chew on in regard to what we sow and how we can reap the benefit or reap from it in the future.

People. Ultimately, our enterprises involve people, whether it is those who sell to us, our employees, or our clients. What are you sowing in regard to those people? Are you sowing good will? Are you sowing a caring attitude? Are you sowing to their interests over your own? As you do these things, I believe you will reap a tremendous harvest. People will genuinely like and appreciate you, and people do business with people they genuinely like and appreciate. When you fail, and you will from time to time, people will be much more forgiving if you have sown properly.

Product. Whether we have something tangible or not, we all have some product that others purchase or use. Are you sowing excellence in your product? Are you sowing longevity? Are you sowing reliability and dependability? As you sow these things people will come back for more of the same, as well as other products you offer. You will reap their loyalty and their return. You will also reap a good reputation as word gets out on what you have sown into other's lives.

Charity. I believe that every enterprise ought to have as a foundational value that it will be charitable. That in some way, be it large or small, they will give back. Are you sowing to your community? Are you sowing of your time, money or energy? As you do, you will reap three primary things. First, a better community. Second, you will reap a deep sense of satisfaction that your community is better because you gave something back to it. Third, people will want to do business with you because they know that part of their business will in turn benefit their community.

Sow some good stuff this week. And you'll reap the benefit later!

Chris' Commentary:
The best way to insure that you will one day reach your goal of excellence in work and life is to make sure that you are day by day continuing to learn, grow and improve yourself. I recently heard Zig Ziglar say that he has read for three hours a day for 25 years. The point is that he has taken control of his mind and his learning and it has transformed his life, his work, his family and his income. What about you? What can you do to improve yourself each and every day? The idea of continual self-improvement must be one that you diligently take by decision. You must decide that every day will see the successful completion of self-growth. While you may not be able to read for three hours a day, certainly you can do so for 15 minutes. And in what ways can you improve your skills? Look each day for a way to do what you do better, faster, or smarter.

Action Point: Starting today, make some improvement in your life each day for the next seven days. By then, you will see it forming into a habit!



3. The Last Word...

It has been said that Compound Interest is one of the most powerful forces in the world... But when I was preparing for my latest CD program based on my keynote speech, The Winning With Influence, I took a look at that concept and gave it a new twist I call Compounding Influence.

You see when you learn to influence someone, you aren't just influencing them, you are opening up doors to influence everyone in their network! And if you are a good influencer, that can take on exponential growth!

Think about it. If you try to sell something to someone and you aren't very good at influencing, you won't influence them and you lose the sale. However if you get better at the art of influence, you make that sale, and the product performs the way you say it does, you now have another influencer on your team! He or she may have ten friends or relatives that they tell about your product. And, as the old ad says, "And so on, and so on, and so on.."

The same is true with children. If you are skillful at influencing your kids, you will be able to influence their friends.

In politics, every four years a president is elected because of his ability to influence people to vote for him. He doesn't know every person that votes for him; but through influencing others, they in turn influence others, who in turn influence others.

So, as you seek out personal development, seek to grow your influence through improving your character and your skills so that others view you as a person to follow.

Learn to harness the power of compounding influence and as you do, you will see your influence grow exponentially! -- CW
