SUCCESS Book Summaries

What others are saying about Chris Widener...

The Angel Inside is truly one of the most inspiring, encouraging motivational books I have ever read. It speaks to everyone who has ever had a dream about anything that has significance. I found it impossible to stop reading, once I got started. This coming from a man who has never completely read a book of fiction, because I had a closed mind on the subject. I have always said, "When I get all of the truth, then I'll start reading fiction." It was a wonderful thrill to read a book of fiction that contained an enormous amount of truth and encouragement.
Zig Ziglar

One of the great young speakers that just blew me away while I was here is Chris Widener. This young man has the talent, the articulation, the message, the presence, the ability, and the delivery of a dynamic presenter. I think you will be seeing a lot of him in the future; in his books, in his audio programs, his seminars and live presentations. He is one of the brand new top stars on the International platform-speaking circuit.
Denis Waitley

Hey, we have had a fantastic weekend these three days. It has been phenomenal. And thanks to Chris for doing such a fantastic job being the master of ceremonies. Helping making it run smooth. This guy is nothing short of phenomenal. His patience, his knowledge, his ability to engage with everyone. He had to engage with the speakers, audience and everybody. Just phenomenal. Thanks a million Chris, you did a fabulous job.
Jim Rohn

I have spoken to more than 3,000 audiences and I can tell you that Chris Widener is one of the best speakers in America today. He does wonderful introductions, wonderful development, extremely motivational, he is funny, he is sharp, he is quick and to the point. If you are thinking about using him for any reason you can not go wrong with Chris. He is a great guy.
Brian Tracy

Chris Widener is a powerful presenter, a quick wit, and a home run every time. He definitely challenges you to the next level in life and work.
Kevin Mather, CFO, Seattle Mariners Baseball Team

Our people loved Chris and loved his material. He was extremely helpful and challenging. My sales team and I highly recommend him!
Phil Castillo, Director, Northern Channels, Cisco Systems

Chris was very challenging and enriching. The leadership principles that he spoke on were at the very core of what we are trying to accomplish here on the HBS campus. Chris taught us the tenets of true leadership and how to immediately apply those truths in our own leadership situation. I would encourage everyone to learn from Chris Widener's Extraordinary Leaders seminar!
John Lunde, Harvard Business School, Student Leader, MBA

Welcome!

I have to say that living your dreams is such a possibility! Many of you who have heard me speak know that my start was, well, definitely less than stellar. In fact, I had a very rough start—drugs, alcohol, skipping school—nothing any parent wants their kid taking part in. But something happened when I was 17. I experienced a transformational moment, and from that pivotal moment I made the decision to choose a different path, to make different decisions, and my life changed! Now, it took work, it took commitment, it took resolve.

Let’s not kid ourselves, change is rarely easy, but IT IS WORTH IT! Let me encourage you with all of my heart, if you’re sitting on the proverbial fence, hoping life will somehow change for you, STOP! Don’t waste any more time. Hop off that fence and get moving! Make that decision and move on it! YOUR life will be the better for it. Get going, get goaling and move toward the life you want to create. Don’t procrastinate on pursuing changes that will make ALL the difference in your life!

You Are Made for Success!

What in the World Are You Doing? by Chris Widener

Let’s talk about leaving an impact legacy. “What is an impact legacy?” you may ask. It is how you impact people and the world around you. You see, many people glide through life and do not make much of an impact. That is unfortunate. Others, though, those driven by a purpose and passion for living, are continually making the world a better place and making an impact wherever they go. That’s what I believe you want to do.

In order to help you reflect on this, I want to ask you a question: What in the world are you doing?

Here is the typical life—typical, though not everybody does it this way. For the most part, people’s lives generally go something like this:

You’re born
You eat and sleep
You play with toys
You go to school
You play Little League
You go to school
You learn to drive
You go to school
You leave high school
You go to more school, but you pay for it now
You get a job
You get married
You buy a house
You have kids
You watch your kids eat, sleep, play and go to school
You work, work and work
You retire
You die

That’s the basic life, isn’t it? I know there is more to it, but that is about it for most people.

Here is that question again: What in the world are you doing?

I mean, what are you doing besides the typical “enjoying yourself while you are waiting to die” scenario? What kind of impact are you making?

What I believe sets the successful apart is that they don’t just live the average life. They don’t just pass time. They make an impact. They have something compelling in their life that drives them—something that gives them an answer when they are asked that question: What in the world are you doing?

I’m helping children.
I’m creating a business that supports many families.
I lead a church.
I am defending our liberties.
I am raising great children.
I’m teaching others to improve their lives.
I help people have fun.
I create memories for people.

In other words, successful people always come down to this: I make an impact and help other people by (fill in your purpose here).

What in the world are you doing?

If you want to be successful, you need to be able to answer that by describing how you help others. If you aren’t helping others, if you aren’t making an impact, you are just taking up space, eating food and waiting to die.

Here’s the question for you to answer and what to do with your answer: What in the world are you doing?

If you know, then you are good to go—live it and make an impact!

If you don’t know, then maybe you need to reflect on what you are doing, what your life is about, and how you can explode the mundane bubble you may be living in!

The world needs impact makers—so live to be one!

2. Made for Success Quote and Commentary

“Your goal should be out of reach but not out of sight.” —Anita DeFrantz

Chris’s Commentary:
Goals are funny things. They have to be set just right in order to be most effective. If they are set too close—close enough for us to touch them—then they aren’t goals but reality. If they are set so far away that we can’t see them, then we forget that they exist and we live only in our current reality. So what are your goals? Have you reviewed them lately? Are they far enough away to make you work, stretch and strive for them, yet close enough for them to be firmly in your sights?

Action Point:
Sit down today and restate your primary six-month goal in the following categories: physical, emotional, financial, career, family and spiritual. Then write them down on a small card and put it somewhere where you will see it regularly.

3. The Last Word...

I want to give this issue’s last word to my dear departed friend and personal-achievement icon Jim Rohn. I had the honor and pleasure of working with Jim to develop The Jim Rohn One-Year Success Plan, one of the most comprehensive resources of goal-setting and success plans ever created. Enjoy this brief excerpt from one of Jim’s presentations in the program. —CW

Goal-Setting
I’ve often said the major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get. That is why goals are so powerful. They are part of the fabric that makes up our lives. And goal-setting is where we create our goals.

Goal-setting is powerful, partly because it provides focus. It shapes our dreams. It gives us the ability to home in on the exact actions we need to perform to achieve everything we desire in life. Goals are GREAT because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that we never have before. In order to reach our goals we must become better. We must change and grow.

Also, goals provide long-term vision in our lives. We all need lots of powerful, long-range goals to help us get past short-term obstacles. Life is designed in such a way that we look long term and live short term. We dream for the future and live in the present. Unfortunately, the present can produce many difficult obstacles. But fortunately, the more powerful our goals (because they are inspiring and believable), the more we will be able to act on them in the short term and guarantee that they will actually come to pass! —Jim Rohn
